It depends on what you need or want the generator to do. A house with basic needs could install a sub panel and just feed a refrigerator, a furnace, and some lights. You also might need to run a well pump, a sump pump, freezer, microwave, and other items. The average home with minimal needs requires a 10 Kilowatt (KW) generator.
Larger homes may requires a larger generator. Some homeowners want to be able to use electric ovens, dishwashers, and laundry equipment. In these cases a larger generator may be needed, in the 12 to 25 KW range.
A top of the line installation, would be for the homeowner who wants the power outage to cause no incipience whatsoever. We have many homes with generators in the 25 to 50 KW range. At this size, a heated pool, sauna, and large air conditioning systems would all be powered by the generator.
