Generator set - An electrical generator, driven by an engine to produce electricity. It usually consists of an engine, similar to one in your car, complete with a radiator, fan, and other accessories. A battery is used to start the engine, and a trickle charger keeps the battery fully charged. A control panel has gauges, meters, and switches to control and monitor the generator set. Safety devices protect the generator and your loads from faults. Most generator sets come in an outdoor enclosure. Some have sound attenuation to make them quiet. Smaller generator sets may be air cooled instead of water cooled. Generator sets are available fueled by LP gas (propane), Natural Gas, or Diesel. Diesel units will also generally run on home heating oil.
Automatic transfer switch - An electrical/mechanical device, it switches your electrical loads from the local utility to the generator, and back again. It is mechanically interlocked so that it is impossible for generator power to flow back out over the power lines, where it could possibly injure power company linemen. Transfer switches are usually UL listed.
